The UFC 260 mixed martial arts tournament took place on March 28 in Las Vegas (Nevada, USA). The heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic of the United States fought the challenger Francis Ngannou of France in the main fight of the tournament.
Stipe Miocic (38, USA)
Stipe already faced Francis Ngannou in January 2018. On the eve of the UFC 220 tournament, the American was the underdog, but was able to survive the starting onslaught of the Frenchman, eventually winning on points.
Miocic has a good stance. He works mainly with his hands, sometimes including low kicks. Most of his victories in MMA are by knockout, 15 times (75% of all his victories). He has never won by painful or choking holds.
Francis Ngannou (34, France)
Francis Ngannou is the most formidable knockout artist in the UFC. After losses to Miocic and Derrick Lewis, the Frenchman had four fights in which he won only by knockouts in the first rounds. Curtis Blades, Kane Velasquez, Junior dos Santos and Jairzinho Rosenstrike all got under the hot hand. Ngann needed only 162 seconds in total.
The UFC had hoped to schedule the Francis Ngannou vs. Derrick Lewis 2 fight on August 7, but sources now say that is unlikely. Schedule conflicts. Nothing has been decided at this point, but to my knowledge, September is the new target.
If the Ngannou vs. Lewis fight is removed from UFC 265, the event will likely be headlined by a bout of UFC welterweight champion Amanda Nunes vs. contender Julianna Pena. A number of other interesting bouts are currently scheduled for UFC 265, including welterweight Michael Chiesa vs. Vicente Luque, featherweight Jose Aldo vs. Pedro Munoz and women’s featherweight Angela Hill vs. Tecia Torres. However, even though these are all quality fights, fans certainly wanted to see the scheduled main event between Ngannou and Lewis the most. It looks like fans will have to wait a while longer.
It’s worth noting that UFC 266 is scheduled for September 25, so it will be interesting to see if Ngannou vs. Lewis makes it onto that card, given that it already features UFC bantamweight champion Jan Blachowicz vs. Glover Teixeira as the No. 1 contender and UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski vs. Brian Ortega.
The fighters walked around the octagon without punching or fighting. They landed 31 punches for two in 15 minutes – Cormier and Miocic, who fought in the same tournament, hit each other 54 times in four minutes of the title fight. Ngannou only hit 11 times – less than a punch per minute. Lewis scored the remaining twenty or so. Fans booed the fighters from the middle of the first round to the end of the fight. During the second five minutes, the referee even stopped the fight to explain to the fighters that they should fight, not play staring. It didn’t help.
The judges gave the win to Lewis – simply because he was swinging his arms and legs more often. After the fight, Lewis was not even interviewed in the traditional octagon – there was nothing to ask. UFC commentator Joe Rogan called it the worst fight in the history of the UFC heavyweight division.
